Connor Read, 29, was taken by ICE agents after he was invited to a green card (residency permit) interview in Tampa, Florida on 3 June, and separated from his wife, Jaelin, 25, and his twin sons Ryder and Ozzie, three. According to the Times newspaper , he was subject to a removal order in 2011 but at the age of 16 was granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) status , a policy that provides deportation relief and work permits to eligible individuals brought to the US as children. He met Jaelin on a dating app in 2020, when his immigration status was unsettled. Having married, the couple attempted to apply for a green card. On 3 June, Read was invited to attend a green card meeting at the federal immigration building in Tampa. In the interview room, four ICE agents arrested him and removed him from the building. Immigration officials told Jaelin Read that her husband would not be coming home. He was issued a final order of removal issued by an Orlando, Florida immigration judge from January 2011. “Read entered the United States on 21 November 2007, through the Orlando international airport as a non-immigrant with an F-2 visa, as a dependent of an F-1 student visa non-immigrant student. After a violation of the terms of their visa, Read was placed into removal proceedings. “Under President Trump and [homeland security] secretary Mullin, ICE is targeting the worst of the worst.

DACA recipient Jessica Trevino sues US after deportation to Mexico

A Texas mother who was deported to Mexico despite having permission to stay in the United States under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, programme has sued the federal government after it told her it would end that permission over “unauthorised travel” linked to her deportation. Rozas has asked the court to declare that her removal was unlawful, order the government to facilitate her return to the US, and allow her DACA status to remain valid. “The government had no lawful basis to remove her, and we filed this petition to demand she be brought back home,” he said. Their three children, all US citizens, are staying with family on the US side near the border. As a DACA recipient, she must keep a clean criminal record and cannot travel outside the United States. DHS (Dept. of Homeland Security) had not responded to a request for comment as of Thursday afternoon. An immigration judge under the Justice Department had issued a voluntary departure order for Trevino in February while she was in ICE (immigration enforcement agency) custody, but a valid DACA status prevents the Department of Homeland Security from deporting her. “I would be so blessed to be able to go back home, because that’s what I long for most right now. According to a DHS letter sent in February to Democratic Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the current Trump administration has deported 86 DACA recipients and arrested 241 others. Advocates for DACA recipients say Trevino’s case is part of a wider pattern. “This is what a deliberate, systematic effort to destroy DACA looks like in practice: target recipients one by one, manufacture justifications after the fact, and leave their children to grow up without them,” said Todd Schulte, president of FWD.us, a policy organisation that defends immigration rights. The lawsuit centres on Trevino’s claim that she was deported despite holding valid DACA protection, and now faces losing that protection because of the very removal she is challenging, while her children remain in the US without her.

MALDEF STATEMENT ON FIFTH CIRCUIT RULING TO DENY STUDENTS’ REQUEST TO DEFEND TEXAS DREAM ACT

LOS ANGELES – On Thursday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld a district court ruling that denied immigrant students in Texas the opportunity to defend a law allowing them to pay the same tuition as most students at public schools and universities. MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) appealed the decision to deny intervention on behalf of Students for Affordable Tuition (SAT), an association of students who would be forced to pay higher tuition because of their immigration status. Saenz, MALDEF president and general counsel: “The 2-1 decision of the panel in the Fifth Circuit of Appeals on the Texas tuition-equity case is an extreme disappointment. The panel majority is now complicit in one of the greatest juridical travesties in recent history – the elimination in the course of one afternoon in early June 2025 of a duly-enacted state law of nearly a quarter century in duration based on collusion between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and now-deposed U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. MALDEF, after further consultation with our clients, will be seeking further federal–court review. “The panel majority has essentially written out of existence the right of intervention to permit integrally-interested parties to participate in all phases of a lawsuit, including discovery and full briefing of key motions. In the future, in the Fifth Circuit states at least, proposed intervenors will have to prove that they will win before having the most cursory of opportunities to participate in a case. “In addition, the panel majority has perverted the Tenth Amendment to permit the federal government to secure any change in state policy it desires, so long as it is at least tangentially linked to an area of federal authority, such as the regulation of immigration. Under the panel majority’s reasoning, for example, a future Congress could require Texas to implement a state income tax if the state wants to be allowed to deny driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.” MALDEF has also sought to intervene in tuition cases on behalf of students in Kansas, Kentucky, and Oklahoma; the organization is working to protect access to affordable higher education for students who have lived, studied, and contributed to their communities for most of their lives.
