Amazon’s Zoox expands its robotaxi service to Las Vegas airport

Zoox isn’t wasting any time now that it’s allowed to operate and charge for rides in its custom-built robotaxi. The company has extended its commercial robotaxi service in Las Vegas to include rides to and from Harry Reid International Airport. Customers will be able to hail rides to the airport beginning Thursday, according to Zoox. The expansion, which unlocks a critical ride-hailing destination, builds on a series of recent wins for the Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle technology company. Silicon Valley-based Zoox spent more than a decade developing its self-driving system and custom robotaxi that lacks traditional controls like a steering wheel and pedals. While it has made progress, even providing rides to customers in Las Vegas for a year, it wasn’t able to operate as a true commercial robotaxi service. That changed in August after federal safety regulators gave Zoox a temporary exemption from certain motor vehicle safety standards. The commercial exemption, which lasts two years and allows Zoox to deploy up to 2,500 vehicles, spans eight federal motor vehicle standards, including windshield defrosting and light vehicle braking systems. The exemption has kicked Zoox’s business expansion into drive. The startup community will gather to answer a pivotal question: How do you build sustainably in the AI era?

Bill Gates says AI bosses are privately scared and publicly silent; Here's why

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says the AI industry is knowingly downplaying the risks of artificial intelligence because too much investment money is at stake. In a new interview and a nearly 6,000-word essay, Gates warns of mass AI job losses across law, medicine, software and customer service, calls for a token tax on AI use, and pushes for global rules on AI bioterrorism risks. He also wants caregiving jobs reserved for humans.

Office security workers for OpenAI, Anthropic, and other tech firms authorize a strike

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Union security workers for the offices of some of Silicon Valley's biggest tech companies have authorized a strike. The union, which represents around 14,000 workers, said it is negotiating for better wages and benefits. Anthropic recently told staff to work from home in light of a possible security team strike. Union security workers for the California offices of OpenAI, Anthropic, and other tech companies announced on Wednesday that they had authorized a strike. The security personnel, who are seeking better pay, are employed by staffing agencies that provide building security for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and Salesforce, the SEIU-United Service Workers West said. Business Insider previously reported that Anthropic asked employees to work from home last week, as the company believed there could be an imminent strike by Allied Universal, the security staffing firm for its San Francisco office. On Wednesday, an unfair-labor-practice strike was officially authorized as union security officers marched through San Francisco and near the offices of OpenAI and Anthropic. It was not immediately clear if a strike would definitely go ahead, or when. Security workers seeking improved pay and benefits gathered in San Francisco on Wednesday.
