Trump leans into Islamophobia and conspiracy in last-ditch campaign rallies

Summary

United States President Donald Trump has doubled down on Islamophobic rhetoric and conspiracy theories about the Democratic Party at campaign events in Iowa and Kansas, days before the US votes in crucial midterm elections that will decide who controls Congress during Trump’s last two years as president. The president repeated his claim that Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic US Senate hopeful from Michigan, is a “jihadist” at both rallies on Sunday, and joked that if he gets elected, the Senate will have to install metal detectors to scan him before he enters the building. “We’ll have a hundred senators, and most of them will go directly [into the Senate]… We’re gonna have to get a special metal detector for Abdul,” Trump said, drawing laughter from the crowd. He also repeated unfounded claims that El-Sayed is a member of the transnational Muslim Brotherhood, branches of which the US has deemed foreign “terrorist” organisations. At both events, Trump repeatedly urged his supporters to make sure they go out and vote, asking them to “pretend I’m on the ballot”, as he sought to energise Republican voters ahead of what polling suggests could be a bruising election for the party. The two rallies were cancelled last week but were suddenly rescheduled . They will be Trump’s final travelling events before the election. In Kansas, Trump attacked the Democratic Senate hopeful Adam Hamilton, a church pastor , for his support for trans rights, and called him a “stiff” who reads his sermons from teleprompters. The US-Israel war on Iran, the cost of living, immigration, perceived media bias against him, and the administration of former President Joe Biden also featured heavily in Trump’s two speeches. Kansas has five federal congressional seats up for election in the midterms: one Senate seat and all four House seats. In Iowa, the Senate race is too close to call, but polling suggests that two Iowan state representative seats up for grabs are leaning Democrat.

File | Photo Credit: Shiv Kumar Pushpakar The Congress on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) hit back at Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks that the government is ready to convene a special session of Parliament on the SIR issue, saying if he is serious about the proposal, he should first secure the resignation of his "hatchet man", Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and also suspend SIR. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said 82 days have gone by since the Monsoon Session of Parliament was adjourned sine die and it has still not been prorogued. He should also suspend SIR," the Congress leader said. Why doesn't he have the courage to convene an all-party meeting to discuss these proposals in detail, the Congress leader said. Shah said the government is ready to convene a special session of Parliament on the issue and dared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to debate the matter in the House. Dismissing the INDIA bloc's rally in Delhi on Sunday (November 1, 2026) as a "save infiltrator" rally, he wondered how the Congress formed governments in States, including Telangana, if the EVMs are bad, and said that Rahul Gandhi can become Prime Minister only in mock Parliament. Come for debate." If a Parliament session is held, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will "shred Congress into pieces," he said and accused the Congress of wishing to be in the limelight through "anarchy." The grand old party was trying to stop the SIR exercise to protect "infiltrators from Bangladesh" in the electoral rolls, he alleged and asserted that the BJP would remove every infiltrator from the electoral rolls. How a Harvard dream ended in tragedy for a Pakistani family

Islamabad, Pakistan – The sign above the Rana Malik Center, a dairy shop in Islamabad’s G-10 neighbourhood, advertises milk, fresh yoghurt, lassi and desi ghee. Rana Muhammad Ijaz has lived with his family in the apartment above for more than three decades. Sitting outside his shop in late October, Ijaz recalled how his youngest daughter, Laiba, would make tea for him every morning and then again at night before bedtime. “She used to massage my shoulders before I went to bed too.” he told Al Jazeera. Ijaz sat outside his shop, remembering her. “Now that she is gone, I miss it all.” Laiba Ijaz, 24, a physics gold medallist from the publicly funded International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), was found dead near her home on October 9. Noman claimed to work at the Supreme Court, showed Ijaz a service card and said he needed no licence because he was a government employee. “The card looked right to me too. Documents shared with Al Jazeera appear to trace a real application: Harvard offer and scholarship letters, a US immigration form with an official-looking stamp, a sponsor’s affidavit from a New York relative, an embassy record bearing Laiba’s photograph and a business-class ticket to Boston. The final file, handed over in late September, also contained a bank statement in Laiba’s name and an October 12 visa interview date, Ijaz said. In early October, Ijaz said he called Noman to help prepare his daughter for the interview. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) said Noman was not a registered visa agent. The government also has left a gaping hole in the market for foreign studies: It does not regulate education consultancies, according to the industry body All Pakistan Association of Foreign Education and Immigration Consultants. “I do not know of a regulatory body that checks or registers education consultants,” Nushmiya Sukhera, cofounder of CollegeWorks, a college consultancy in Lahore, told Al Jazeera. “No education consultancy can guarantee admission,” she said.
