Supreme Court rejects Trump's request to stop California counting disputed votes

Summary

The US Supreme Court has rejected a last-minute request by the Trump administration asking it to intervene in California's midterm election vote count. The justice department wanted 20,000 ballots to be set aside that it alleged may have been issued to non-US citizens in the state. Two lower courts had already rejected the request. State election officials had questioned the federal government's claims - saying the process used to identify alleged non-citizens was inaccurate. The Monday ruling comes on the eve of the midterms, which will determine which political party controls the US Congress for the last two years of President Donald Trump's second term. The Supreme Court announced its decision in a one-line order, saying it was denying the justice department's request for an injunction. "The application for injunction pending appeal presented to Justice Kagan and by her referred to the Court is denied," it reads. Its means rulings made in lower courts will stand and essentially ends the Trump administration's bid to disqualify the ballots. California is the most populous state in America with some 23 million people on its voting register. As of Sunday night, more than six million mail-in ballots had already been received, according to the California secretary of state's office.

NCLAT sends notice to Boeing as Jet Airways seeks ₹872-crore refund for undelivered aircraft

The liquidator of bankrupt airline Jet Airways has moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), seeking recovery of $92.13 million (about ₹ 872 crore at current exchange rates) from US aircraft manufacturer Boeing in advance payments made under aircraft purchase agreements signed in 2013. After Jet Airways failed to secure a revival, the Supreme Court ordered its liquidation on 7 November 2024. Jet Airways, once one of India's leading private airlines, suspended operations in April 2019 after mounting debt, financial losses and a cash crunch left it unable to fund daily operations. In November 2024, the Supreme Court overturned the revival process and ordered Jet Airways' liquidation, ending efforts to revive the airline. File | Photo Credit: Shiv Kumar Pushpakar The Congress on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) hit back at Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks that the government is ready to convene a special session of Parliament on the SIR issue, saying if he is serious about the proposal, he should first secure the resignation of his "hatchet man", Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and also suspend SIR. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said 82 days have gone by since the Monsoon Session of Parliament was adjourned sine die and it has still not been prorogued. He should also suspend SIR," the Congress leader said. Why doesn't he have the courage to convene an all-party meeting to discuss these proposals in detail, the Congress leader said. Shah said the government is ready to convene a special session of Parliament on the issue and dared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to debate the matter in the House. Dismissing the INDIA bloc's rally in Delhi on Sunday (November 1, 2026) as a "save infiltrator" rally, he wondered how the Congress formed governments in States, including Telangana, if the EVMs are bad, and said that Rahul Gandhi can become Prime Minister only in mock Parliament. Come for debate." If a Parliament session is held, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will "shred Congress into pieces," he said and accused the Congress of wishing to be in the limelight through "anarchy." The grand old party was trying to stop the SIR exercise to protect "infiltrators from Bangladesh" in the electoral rolls, he alleged and asserted that the BJP would remove every infiltrator from the electoral rolls.
