Business leaders react as a 'blunami' sweeps America on Election Night

Brad Gerstner and Reid Hoffman are two of Silicon Valley's most prominent elite investors, hedge fund managers, and venture capitalists. Bloomberg and JP Yim/Getty Images Democrats have won full control of Congress. Business and tech leaders are sizing up the outcomes. California's ballot measure targeting billionaires is in the spotlight. The 2026 midterm elections delivered shocking wins for Democrats on Tuesday evening, reshaping the balance of power in Washington. Democrats will take control of both chambers of Congress after flipping key Senate seats, including James Talarico's win in Texas and Sherrod Brown's win in Ohio. Talarico became the first Democrat elected to the US Senate in Texas in decades, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk spent over $150 million supporting the race's Republican candidate, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Business leaders, tech executives, and investors are now assessing what the new political landscape could mean for their industries. In California, the results of the nation's first-ever ballot measure to impose a one-time 5% wealth tax on residents with net worth exceeding $1 billion could have major implications for the state's elite. Results of that vote were not yet in as of 11:30 p.m.

Texas just went blue, and the tech bros are sad

Tech bros headed to Texas to find redder pastures. Democrats just flipped the governor's mansion and a Senate seat. Elías Valverde II/The Dallas Morning News via Getty Images, Brandon Bell/Getty Images, Jordan Vonderhaar/Bloomberg via Getty Images Texas drew in tech moguls — including many who wanted redder politics than Silicon Valley. Well, it just turned pretty blue. We're starting to see the anger from tech execs trickle out. Texas — with its cowboy hats, slow-smoked barbecue, and de-regulatory stance — was supposed to be the California antidote for tech bros fed up with Silicon Valley's Democratic politics. On Tuesday, voters handed Democrats control of the House and Senate. In Texas, they selected James Talarico for the Senate and Gina Hinojosa for the governor's mansion, despite massive Republican spending backed by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk . "Ugh, I moved here to get away from the left lunacy!" It was clear over the past year that President Trump was going to lead the GOP off the cliff because of ICE (immigration enforcement agency), the war, tariffs, the other war and inflation. … but I never expected Texas to turn blue 🤯 Ugh, I moved here to get away from the left lunacy! https://t.co/VTFzfXchHp — @jason (@Jason) November 4, 2026 Chamath Palihapitiya, another "All-In" co-host, was more dire during a Tuesday-night livestream. Talarico is the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate election since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988.
