Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, in a post on X on Tuesday (August 4, 2026), said, "In a major breakthrough, Amritsar Commissionerate Police busts two ISI-backed cross border terror modules, apprehends nine accused, including four juveniles, and recovers 3 illegal pistols, 4 petrol bottle bombs, and 9 live cartridges," He said preliminary investigation reveals that the accused were acting at the behest of foreign-based ISI handlers, who were attempting to recruit local youth to carry out terror-related activities, conduct surveillance of security installations, procure illegal weapons, and disturb public peace. The investigation also uncovered the installation of surveillance cameras near railway tracks, with footage allegedly shared with foreign handlers, DGP said. FIRs have been registered at Police Stations Mohkampura, Airport, and C-Division, Amritsar. Further investigation is underway to identify the remaining members of the ISI-backed network, establish its forward and backward linkages, trace the financial trail, and uncover any involvement in other terror-related activities, DGP Yadav said. Wife of Rs 88-crore fraud mastermind deported from UAE to face probe in India

Nearly two weeks after India secured the return of the mastermind behind an Rs 88-crore investment fraud, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has brought back his wife from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), tightening the net around one of Maharashtra's high-profile crime cases. Vishakha Rathod, who was wanted by Indian agencies and the subject of an Interpol Red Notice, was deported to India on August 3 following coordinated efforts by the CBI, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). She landed in Pune, where a team of the Maharashtra Police took her into custody. The CBI said Vishakha Rathod was traced and brought back through close coordination with authorities in the UAE after an Interpol Red Notice was issued against her at India's request. The CBI coordinated the operation with international agencies, while the MEA and MHA facilitated the diplomatic and legal process leading to her deportation. Vishakha Rathod's deportation follows the return of her husband, Avinash Rathod, who investigators describe as the alleged mastermind of the fraud. Acting on the notice, authorities in the UAE detained Avinash before deporting him to India on July 23. The case is the latest in India's broader drive to bring back economic offenders and fugitives who have escaped overseas. The agency acts as India's National Central Bureau for Interpol and facilitates international cooperation through the Bharatpol platform. The Centre informed Parliament earlier this week that India has successfully brought back 274 fugitive criminals from 36 countries between 2019 and July 2026 as part of an intensified campaign to ensure offenders who flee abroad are brought back to face justice.

In their letter to the EU, ostensibly about the immediate crisis in Ceuta, they targeted Madrid’s recent policy of allowing undocumented people working in mainland Spain to regularise their migration status , even though this was irrelevant for those involved in the Ceuta situation. One theory is that misleading posts circulated on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook following a 29 June Spanish supreme court ruling that clarified that under international law, the state cannot summarily deport migrants who arrive by sea without due process. The Ceuta episode could also lead to the acceleration of ICE (immigration enforcement agency)-style deportations from the EU. The Italian government in particular wants to see offshore migration centres, or “return hubs”, made possible under the EU’s new return regulation. Yet in a Europe devoid of safe and legal routes for asylum seekers, this is a direction that some of the most senior European legal experts have warned could create a “human rights black hole”.
