Write-In Ralph: South Carolina Republicans challenge Trump’s Senate pick

Summary

Charleston, South Carolina – Avery Milton thought he was a die-hard supporter of US President Donald Trump. The 28-year-old South Carolina native had voted for Trump in the past three elections and believed in his promise to put America first. But ahead of the midterm elections, the president has left him feeling betrayed. “He stabbed us in the back during his second term,” Milton told Al Jazeera. He said many people close to him share this frustration, particularly younger conservatives around his age who are starting families and entering the workforce. Now, Milton is helping lead a grassroots effort to write in Republican Congressman Ralph Norman for the US Senate, rather than support the party nominee, Senator Darline Graham , who has Trump’s endorsement. In the 2022 South Carolina Senate race, write-in votes accounted for just 0.1 percent of all votes cast. Despite the president’s endorsement, Graham has struggled to unite conservatives behind her, potentially giving Democratic challenger Annie Andrews an opening in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the US Senate since 1998. But she made history as the first sibling appointed to fill a Senate vacancy. Milton said he and other supporters wanted a senator who would think independently, rather than simply fall in line with party leadership. “We don’t necessarily want somebody that’s a rubber stamp for everything,” he said, adding that he wanted someone willing to “think of all the sides of an issue and policy”. Among those voters, Democratic Senate candidate Andrews led Graham by 20 percentage points.

On Tuesday (November 3, 2026), West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and BJP leader and former Union Minister Smriti Irani criticised the coming together of the Mamata Banerjee and Congress party. Adhikari referred to Congress as a “4G” party, referring to (Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as “3G” (Karunanidhi, M.K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin), and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Lalu Prasad Yadav Rashtriya Janata Dal as “2G” (Mamata Banerjee-Abhishek Banerjee and Lalu Prasad-Tejashwi Yadav). BJP leader Smriti Irani, who held a press conference in Kolkata also spoke in a similar vein accusing the Trinamool Congress of trampling democracy in the State by unleashing attacks on BJP workers and committing atrocities on women workers. “Today those political goons are joining hands with the Congress at Ramlila Maidan,” she said. West Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) called on all the Opposition parties to come together, keeping their flags aside and instead using “white flags”. Only a few weeks ago, Mamata Banerjee had decided to support Congress candidates in the Nandigram by-polls after her party’s nominee withdrew candidates at the last moment. Reacting to the signs of new political alignment emerging, State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya called Mamata Banerjee, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and CPI(M) State Secretary Md.

Republicans pitch 3.5% income tax cap as an affordability fix in North Carolina—but Gov. Josh Stein says it won’t put ‘more money in anyone’s pockets’

Republican lawmakers in North Carolina have steadily reduced the state’s income taxes for more than a decade. But despite the legislation’s name, “ Lower Taxes for All NC ,” the amendment wouldn’t actually lower state taxes immediately. Under legislation that has already passed, it is scheduled to fall to 3.49% in 2027 . If approved, raising income taxes above 3.5% would require another constitutional amendment, which requires the approval of three-fifths of both chambers of the state legislature and then a majority of voters. For years, Republicans in the legislature have held enough seats to enact their legislation even without the support of the two consecutive Democratic governors who have held the executive position since 2017. To get on the ballot, the measure has already passed the Republican-controlled state Senate and House. In Texas, polls show former Republican attorney general Ken Paxton slightly behind Democrat James Talarico in a Senate race that faces long odds given no Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994. Abdul El-Sayed holds a double digit lead over Republican opponent Mike Rogers in another closely watched Senate contest. Still, Republicans have tried to alleviate voters’ concerns about affordability at the national level, where GOP members control both chambers of Congress. Republicans earlier this year helped push through the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a piece of bipartisan legislation aimed at tackling high housing costs including by accelerating homebuilding and reforming zoning.
