Supreme court rules against Trump over bid to force California to set aside ballots

Summary

Justice department had ordered state to segregate and not count 20,000 ballots from people it claims are non-citizens US midterms – live updates The supreme court on Monday ruled against the Trump administration and its attempts to force California election officials to segregate and not count ballots from people that the justice department claims are non-citizens. The ruling follows several lower courts siding with California officials, who argued the federal government was seeking to interfere in state elections. California and the Trump administration have been in a legal standoff over the past few weeks following the justice department’s claim that 20,000 non-citizens were on the state’s voter rolls. The DoJ delivered a USB drive to Los Angeles and Sacramento election officials in mid-October with the names, giving only 48 hours for officials to review the list and threatening to sue if the ballots were not sequestered until those listed could verify their citizenship. Election officials refused, leading to a series of courtroom battles. Continue reading...

On Tuesday (November 3, 2026), West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and BJP leader and former Union Minister Smriti Irani criticised the coming together of the Mamata Banerjee and Congress party. Adhikari referred to Congress as a “4G” party, referring to (Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as “3G” (Karunanidhi, M.K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin), and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Lalu Prasad Yadav Rashtriya Janata Dal as “2G” (Mamata Banerjee-Abhishek Banerjee and Lalu Prasad-Tejashwi Yadav). BJP leader Smriti Irani, who held a press conference in Kolkata also spoke in a similar vein accusing the Trinamool Congress of trampling democracy in the State by unleashing attacks on BJP workers and committing atrocities on women workers. “Today those political goons are joining hands with the Congress at Ramlila Maidan,” she said. West Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) called on all the Opposition parties to come together, keeping their flags aside and instead using “white flags”. Only a few weeks ago, Mamata Banerjee had decided to support Congress candidates in the Nandigram by-polls after her party’s nominee withdrew candidates at the last moment. Reacting to the signs of new political alignment emerging, State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya called Mamata Banerjee, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and CPI(M) State Secretary Md.

Republicans pitch 3.5% income tax cap as an affordability fix in North Carolina—but Gov. Josh Stein says it won’t put ‘more money in anyone’s pockets’

Republican lawmakers in North Carolina have steadily reduced the state’s income taxes for more than a decade. But despite the legislation’s name, “ Lower Taxes for All NC ,” the amendment wouldn’t actually lower state taxes immediately. Under legislation that has already passed, it is scheduled to fall to 3.49% in 2027 . If approved, raising income taxes above 3.5% would require another constitutional amendment, which requires the approval of three-fifths of both chambers of the state legislature and then a majority of voters. For years, Republicans in the legislature have held enough seats to enact their legislation even without the support of the two consecutive Democratic governors who have held the executive position since 2017. To get on the ballot, the measure has already passed the Republican-controlled state Senate and House. In Texas, polls show former Republican attorney general Ken Paxton slightly behind Democrat James Talarico in a Senate race that faces long odds given no Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994. Abdul El-Sayed holds a double digit lead over Republican opponent Mike Rogers in another closely watched Senate contest. Still, Republicans have tried to alleviate voters’ concerns about affordability at the national level, where GOP members control both chambers of Congress. Republicans earlier this year helped push through the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a piece of bipartisan legislation aimed at tackling high housing costs including by accelerating homebuilding and reforming zoning.
