Bengaluru techie couple spends 3 times an IT fresher's salary on travel every month: How much do they spend?

Summary

For many young IT professionals in Bengaluru, managing rent, groceries and daily expenses on an entry-level salary can be challenging. However, a recent social media post has highlighted just how different monthly spending can look for two people working in the same industry and living in the same city. Shubhi and her husband, both senior software engineers , spend around ₹ 1.73 lakh every month on their household expenses. Many freshers joining India's IT services sector start with annual salaries of around ₹ 3.4-3.6 lakh. Depending on the salary structure and deductions, these packages can translate into a monthly take-home salary of approximately ₹ 22,000-27,000. Their average monthly travel expenditure of ₹ 75,000 is almost three times the monthly salary of an entry-level employee. Even as unemployment falls, lack of ‘decent work’ in India

Subscribed with another email? Measured this way, India’s labour market persistently exhibits high levels of informality, insecure employment, and increasing inequalities. Using two rounds of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), 2017-18 and 2023-24, the quality of employment in India has been analysed. Though employment opportunities are increasing, labour protections and job security are not improving at the same pace. Agriculture, which continues to employ the largest share of India’s workforce, remains the lowest-quality employment generating sector. Workers remain dependent on casual employment, subcontracting chains and insecure labour arrangements. Nearly 90% of India’s workforce remains informally employed, a share that has risen since 2019, according to the India Employment Report 2024 (ILO–IHD). However, informalisation of jobs reduces decent work creation in India over time. India has to shift from a ‘job-counting approach’ to a ‘job-quality approach’. Until then, India’s employment success story will remain incomplete — no nation can call itself developed while its workforce remains insecure.

Soaring health insurance costs are quietly preventing wages from rising higher, while workers also shoulder a larger share of premiums, economist says

Open enrollment season for health care plans is about to begin, and many Americans may get sticker shock after seeing how much premiums will rise. But the rising cost of insurance is also quietly eroding wage gains, preventing workers from getting bigger raises than they would otherwise receive. Health insurance costs are a major issue in the midterm election. In addition to higher gas prices and utility bills, insurance has stoked voter anxiety about the rising cost of living. So despite consistently solid wage gains and a labor market that’s at full employment, consumer confidence gauges have tumbled as overall affordability deteriorates. Fresh economic data illustrate why workers aren’t feeling upbeat about more pay. In the third quarter, wages and salaries increased 3.1% from a year ago, according to the employment cost index released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday. But at the same time, employer health insurance contributions jumped 6.4%, matching the fastest pace in two decades, according to economist Guy Berger, senior fellow at the Burning Glass Institute. In a Substack post , he calculated that if employer contributions had instead grown at 3%, which was the pace a few years ago, wage growth would be about 0.2-0.3 percentage points faster today. “That’s not a lot, but not nothing either,” Berger wrote. While spending on drugs and hospital care is going up, the ACA market has come under particular strain since 2025, because Congress didn’t renew the enhanced subsidies that were enacted during the pandemic.

Delhi-NCR pollution curbs: Construction work banned for 16 days to tackle rising air pollution

The Centre has announced a complete suspension of construction and demolition activities across the National Capital Region (NCR) from November 5 to 20 as part of its efforts to curb rising air pollution during the winter season. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Friday said the authorities would take prompt action against industries that fail to meet pollution standards, major sources of emissions and traffic congestion hotspots with the help of the new monitoring system. The announcement comes ahead of the implementation of Delhi's permanent winter anti-pollution framework from November 1. The policy brings several seasonal restrictions under one set of rules, which will apply every year between November 1 and February 28. The framework also provides for restrictions on construction activities that generate dust. In addition, parking fees at authorised parking facilities will be doubled during the winter months.
